The Southport Sharks lost to North Melbourne by 8 points in a tight affair at Arden Street Oval on Saturday Morning.
The Sharks had their chances, but in the end, North proved too good, winning 9.12 (66) to 8.10 (58).
Southport led by a goal at quarter time, but a six goal to one second quarter from the Kangaroos with the wind gave the home side a 23 point lead at half time.
The Sharks kicked three goals late in the third quarter to trail by only ten points and make it game on in the last quarter.
The Sharks threw caution to the wind in the last quarter to try and win and had plenty of chances to do it but couldn’t take them.
Halfway through the last quarter Tom Fields, in his fiftieth game for the club, kicked his third goal of the game to get the Sharks back to two points.
It set up a grandstand finish but to North Melbourne’s credit, they did a great job of hanging on for a well-deserved win.
After the game Southport Coach Steve Daniel said, “It was a disappointing result. We always knew it was going to be a challenge against North Melbourne who had 16-listed players.”
“Our second quarter effort wasn’t great, but other than that, our hunt around the ball was pretty good. We just couldn’t execute in front goal.”
Zac Foot (3 goals), Jacob Dawson (30 disposals) and Jackson Edwards (22 disposals) were the shining lights in the Sharks’ loss.
Young gun Zach Molloy continued to show his talent on the half-back line with another great performance.
Daniel said, “Unfortunately, we had too many players that came in and out of the game. We will learn from it though, and will look to bounce back next week.”
Next week the Sharks play Werribee at Fankhauser Reserve, Southport on Easter Saturday at 12:05pm, and it is free to attend.
