Southport Sharks Health and Fitness Mental Health Blog

We would like to share some tips to help with maintaining mental wellness.

Mental health affects all age groups and demographics, with almost half the population between 16-85 years of age-predicted to experience a mental disorder at some point. Thankfully, these issues are beginning to gain traction and grow in general public awareness.

Southport Sharks Health + Fitness understands that poor mental health can be a contributing factor to poor physical health, and we aim to promote the importance of discussing and maintaining mental wellness. The following are our suggestions for maintaining good mental health.

Working out isn’t just physical, your brain needs training too

Engaging in activities that test the brain. Involve a combination of memory, decision-making and strategising, which keeps the mind active and prevents dementia. Consider playing in a group, as boosting interaction can boost your mood too.

Good nutrition is a natural defence against stress

Fuel your body with a nutritious breakfast (we recommend wholegrain cereals and fruits) and enjoy balanced meals throughout the day. Salmon, tuna and mackerel are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and reduce the risk of dementia and mental decline.

Keep yourself active

Exercising not only keeps you physically strong but is a great form of stress relief and stress prevention. Go for a walk or unwind with yoga. Our personal trainers recommend doing moderate exercise regularly rather than the occasional, hard-core workout – three sessions a week is ideal.

A laugh a day will keep the doctor away

Humour activates the brain’s reward and pleasure centres, generating positive emotions and relaxing the mind. Life is stressful, but don’t take it too seriously. Remember to take care of yourself and laugh yourself silly!

Stress can be managed

Make a list of goals and check them off once completed. Not only will you stay focused and organised, but you also get to reward yourself and feel a sense of accomplishment. Your body will thank you for it.
