The Southport Sharks travelled to Leyshon Park to take on the Yeronga-South Brisbane Devils on Saturday Afternoon.

SENIORS

Southport defeated Yeronga South Brisbane by 83 points, winning 15.8 (98) to 2.3 (15).

The Sharks got off to a great start, kicking five goals to zero in the opening term.

The Devils kicked the first goal of the second quarter to stay in the game before the Sharks added another four majors to lead by 50 points at halftime.

The third quarter was much tighter, with Southport only kicking two goals.

In the final term, the Sharks kicked four goals before the Devils kicked the last goal of the match.

Last year’s Emma Zielke Medalist (QAFLW League Best and Fairest) Steph O’Brien played her best game of the year, leading the way for the Sharks with 23 disposals, five clearances and two goals.

Georja Davies (23 disposals at 87% efficiency), Tearnie Brown (three marks and four inside 50s), and Megan Hunt (24 disposals, seven clearances and six inside 50s) also played well for the Sharks.

After the game, Southport Coach Peter Doherty said, “It was another really pleasing performance.”

“We have now had four solid wins in a row, which has certainly been good for the morale within the group.”

“However, we know that there is still a long way to go before the end of the season, so we have to keep working hard and stay focused on executing our processes.”

The Sharks are looking forward to their next game, which is against their local rivals, Bond University, at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday at 2pm.

Doherty said, “It’s going to be great to test ourselves against Bond. We believe we have grown a lot since we last played them in Round 2, so we can’t wait for the challenge.”

RESERVES

Southport defeated Yeronga South Brisbane by 100 points, winning 16.5 (101) to 0.1 (1).

It is the third time this year that Southport has won by 100 points or more.

The Sharks kicked five goals in the first term, three in the second quarter, three in the third term and five in the last quarter.

Siobhan Ross, fresh from the news of making the Under 18 Queensland squad, kicked five goals and fellow young gun Alicia Gordon kicked four goals.

Ruby Mitchell was also exceptional in her first game back from injury.

The Sharks have now won their last five games, with their last loss in Round 2 against Bond University, who they play this week.

Southport Coach Mal Smith said, “It’s going to be a massive game. In Round 2, they were too good for us, so we know it’s going to be tough, but we are excited about the challenge.

The game against Bond University starts at 4pm on Saturday at Fankhauser Reserve.
