The Sharks were then able to hold on. After the match, Southport Coach Mal Smith said his heart rate went through the roof in the last quarter.
“It was such a tense game. Neither team were able to break the game open all day.”
“Credit to Bond University. They have been the benchmark all year, and we knew it would be a challenge to beat them. Fortunately, though we were able to get over the final hurdle.
“I am so proud of the girls. They have embraced every challenge and have come together so well.
“It has been a tough year. Firstly, to start a whole new team, we had plenty of injuries, covid and weather challenges to get through.”
Alessia Smythe was the Sharks’ best player and was awarded best on the ground for her performance down back.
Southport Coach Mal Smith said, “Alessia was terrific down back. Her intercept marking and ability to get the ball moving forward was pivotal for us winning the game.”
Smith said it was a team performance though, and that the entire team contributed to their premiership victory.
