Southport have kept the unbeaten streak alive but not without a major scare from the 10th placed NT Thunder.
Thunder opened proceedings with an early goal but first quarter specialist Lee Dale quickly answered, then the returning Mitch Johnson ran into an open goal to put us in front and duly saluted his late Grandfather. Fyfe hit debutant Trent Stubbs and he duly kicked his first goal for the club. We held a 13 point advantage at quarter time.
NT kicked a goal 20 seconds into the second term and added two more midway through the quarter but Johnson steadied the ship at the 21 minute mark. Injuries were starting to have an effect on the game with Davis finishing another game early and Miller requiring stitches to a head wound. We were 29 points in front at half time.
Matt Shaw left the field early in the third quarter with some hamstring awareness as the Thunder started to gain the ascendency. They slammed on six goals for the quarter and only trailed by three points late in the term. A Josh Hall mark and resulting 50 metre penalty resulted in a goal that stretched the lead out to 11 points at three quarter time. Both sides were down to 21 fit players and the game was set up for a classic finish.
