Providing an opportunity for students to pathway into the hospitality industry.
With Southport Sharks being located in the City of Gold Coast’s Health and Knowledge Precinct, a Southport Sharks Study and Development Program was established in 2016.
The Study and Development Program purpose
The program’s purpose is to build and foster community relationships with highly regarded education institutions, providing an opportunity for local and international students to pathway into the hospitality industry. Since inception, the program has helped countless students gain real-life experience at Southport Sharks through a variety of internships, Work Integrated Learning programs and cultural days.

Griffith University collaboration offering student practical experience
Southport Sharks is committed to providing students with the opportunity to participate in a program that will assist in preparing them for future roles in the hospitality industry. The diversity of our business allows the students to gain practical on-the-job experience in hotel, house-keeping, front desk, gaming, bars and fine dining.
Southport Sharks works with Griffith University’s Department of Tourism, Sport and Hotel Management to arrange for a number of students to undertake 75-hours of work placement. During September and October each year, students studying a Bachelor of International Tourism and Hospitality Management gained experience throughout the various departments.
“Since 2017 we have worked with Southport Sharks, and at Griffith University we are most appreciative of the club’s support. This program provides students with an invaluable opportunity to link theory with practice. The students benefit by being able to rotate around several key areas of the Club, where they can begin to develop a range of skills. We look forward to the opportunity to work with the Club again in the future.” – Barry Fraser (Work Integrated Learning Program Convenor)

Sharks tour for the Mayor’s Student Ambassador program
Study Gold Coast in collaboration with the Gold Coast City Council has been celebrating our beloved coastline as a premier location for study opportunities since 2014. The program continues to strengthen relationships between the Gold Coast community and international students. By showcasing what the Gold Coast has to offer, students are encouraged to consider their study options in our beautiful city and the potential career opportunities that may arise.
Southport Sharks ‘Aussie’ experience tour
The program involved 13 ambassadors, comprising of 15 nationalities from 11 institutions. This richly diverse group visited Southport Sharks and spent the day diving deep into Australian culture. After a private tour of the club led by CEO, Dean Bowtell, they learnt how to kick a footy from the best in the business, our GM of Football Operations Jarrod Field and Coach, Steve Daniel.
The ambassadors then enjoyed traditional Napoli style pizzas in The Nest, a secluded outdoor area overlooking the Gold Coast skyline, located in Aviary Rooftop Bar.
Southport Sharks is very proud to be a part of this initiative.
