Griffith University hotel internship | Jessica Andrews

Bridging the gap between education and real-world experience. Through our Community Study and Development Program, Southport Sharks has partnered with Griffith University to provide students with valuable, hands-on hospitality and marketing experience.

A Southport Sharks Community Study and Development Program initiative.

The diversity of our hospitality operation allows students to gain tailored, practical experience through our Community Study and Development Program. Southport Sharks Human Resource Manager, Ann-Maree O’Neill has recently worked with Griffith University on a partnership to offer undergraduates work placement for 12-weeks.

The students are able to experience a diverse workforce which in turn allowed them to gain a clear understanding of the departments within hospitality.” – Ann-Maree O’Neill, Human Resource Manager

Griffth University student, Jessica Andrews was provided with the opportunity as a hotel intern under the supervision of Mantra at Sharks General Manager, Gabby Daniels. We spoke with Jessica about the hotel and marketing experience she received and the value it added to her education.

Jess, tell us a little bit about yourself…

I am a final year student at Griffith University studying a Bachelor of Business, majoring in marketing and entrepreneurship. I have a passion for digital and social media marketing.

What did you learn during your internship at Southport Sharks?

The insight I gained mainly focussed on what marketing looks like in the workplace. Gabby provided me with projects allowing me to use initiative and apply my marketing knowledge. I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to observe the workings of the marketing department, giving me an insight into their day-to-day activities and a deeper understanding of marketing.

What are some of the projects you worked on?

Throughout my internship with Mantra at Sharks, I looked to identifying business opportunities, reaching out to relevant people regarding potential partnerships. I completed a micro-environment analysis which helped accumulate useful strategies to present to Gabby. I also reviewed and suggested changes for the hotel listing pages on booking agent websites, to ensure all information was consistent, accurate and on-brand.

I spent a few hours a week with Southport Sharks marketing department working with Content Strategist, Nicole Newman to assist with the creation of content for the hotel website pages by writing blog posts and researching ideas for social media.

Your tips for future interns?

  • Never be afraid of asking questions! Internships are a learning experience and it is important to get the most out of them.
  • Get to know the different departments and ask to have a chat with someone if you are looking to gain more insight.
