Captain Wow

Known from Cairns to Tasmania, Captain Wow are recognised as one of the most versatile party acts in the country. From 60’s flower-powered pop, 70’s disco, 80’s Retro, Reggae, Country Rock and Top 40 Pop – their set has something for everyone. The group have a wealth of industry experience between them, having supported Aussie greats such as Jimmy Barnes and Mental as Anything as a band and front man Nick  Waters has also supported John Farnham, Hunters and Collectors, Mark Seymour and Diesel throughout his musical career. We caught up with Nick to get to know the band a little better.

How long has the been been performing together?
Originally from Tassie, the band was offered a lot of work on the Gold coast. We decided to relocate in the early 90’s and have been here ever since. I’m the only original in the band. Shonay and Courtney are singers, who play guitar and keyboard respectively. Jodie is a multi-instrumentalist who plays drums in our band. They have been with me for over four years now- they’re awesome!

What is Captain Wow’s style of music?
We love vocal harmonies and that’s a big part of our sound. We perform songs form 60’s through to current tunes, ranging from pop, rock, reggae, funk or country- we enjoy the variety in our repertoire! Our setlist usually consists of playing songs that everyone can sing to early on in the night, like The Lumineers, Amy Winehouse or Crowded House… then later change to songs people can dance (and sing) to. This could mean The Doors, Mamas and Papas, ABBA, Meghan Trainor or Vance Joy! It’s all about having fun with the audience, while covering the songs with authenticity and convection.

Catch Captain Wow on our main stage from 8.30pm on Saturday, 9 March. As always, this show is free and non-members are welcome to attend.
