Cody Filewood awarded the NEAFL Rising Star nomination

Southport Sharks forward Cody Filewood has been awarded the Round 9 NEAFL Rising Star nomination after his breakout performance against Redland at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday.
Filewood, 19, collected 21 disposals, nine marks, five rebound 50s, and was named among the Sharks’ best players as they won a crucial match against the Bombers by 18 points.
A former member of the Gold Coast SUNS Academy, Filewood was thrown into defence at the weekend where he shone in an unfamiliar role.
The 184cm and 84kg prospect made his NEAFL debut in 2014 for the Suns, and played only four NEAFL games in his first season at the Sharks last year.
Filewood hopes the performance becomes a turning point in his season after spending some time in the QAFL to regain some confidence.
“I found some form early in the pre-season, but began to lack a bit of confidence when the season started,” he said.
“I went back to the QAFL, and when I got that confidence back, it’s really helped me.
“Hopefully I can continue to work to keep my spot in the team, and we can get some more wins on the board.”
The Rising Star is awarded to the most promising young talent in the NEAFL competition.
Nominees must be under the age of 21 and played less than 20 senior games (excluding games as AFL Academy players) at the start of the 2017 season.
