Sharks overpower Suns Academy in final term
NEAFL Practice Match - Saturday, March 11.
The Southport Sharks have overpowered the Gold Coast Suns Academy on a sunny Saturday morning at Metricon Stadium, overrunning the young but not overawed side with a flurry of last quarter goals to win by 31 points.
A bag of five goals from promising 19-year-old Cody Filewood and an excellent performance from the fleet of foot Seb Rogers set up the Sharks’ 14.6 (90) to 9.5 (59) pre-season victory.
The Sharks, who were fielding an under-23 side, got off to a great start thanks to goals from Mitch Johnson, Filewood and Jon Croad, before the Suns kicked into gear late in the first quarter to peg the deficit back to eight points at quarter time.
From there the lead did not extend to more than three goals either way until the last quarter.
A fairly unknown quantity heading into season 2017, the Sharks looked to move the ball quickly, and at times their pace came at the cost of clean disposal.
Cody Filewood will already be in the back of the mind of many a NEAFL coach, showing elite pace, a strong overhead mark and good decision making.
At 184cm Filewood is not as large as a traditional key forward, but the North Mackay product has shown he is more than capable of punching above his weight class.
Southport’s Brady Egan of The Recruit fame directed traffic well across half back, as well as launching some of the Sharks’ forays forward.
