Aspley steals one-point victory over Southport
NEAFL Practice Match - Saturday, March 4
A stellar second half from James Nelis and a late goal from Fletcher McIvor saw Aspley triumph over Southport by a point in a thrilling NEAFL practice match victory on Saturday.
In a scrappy but fiery pre-season hit-out at Fankhauser Reserve, the Hornets came from behind at the last change to steal a 8.6 (54) to 7.11 (53) win.
Southport debuted a whopping 15 new faces in their NEAFL line-up, whilst Aspley welcomed back former junior Ben Warren from a stint in Victoria, which included 29 games for North Melbourne.
Warren made his presence felt early, marking strongly overhead and slotting the first goal of the match, and presented a dangerous option for Aspley before being rested for a majority of the last quarter.
Both sides had plenty of opportunities on the overlap in the first quarter, however skill errors hampered most of them as the players blew out the pre-season cobwebs on the wide expanses of Fankhauser Reserve.
