Baxter eager for NEAFL comeback in pursuit of flag
Southport’s busy recruitment drive has netted another big signing of powerful Subiaco forward Hamish Shepheard.
The 25-year-old Former Fremantle rookie spent an injury-prone two seasons at the Dockers in 2010-11, and then played for Sandringham in the VFL in 2012 and spent 2014 and 2015 playing for Augusta-Margaret River in the South West Football League.
He joined Subiaco this year where the 198cm and 101kg full-forward booted 51 goals from 21 WAFL games as the Lions lost the Grand Final to the Peel Thunder.
Shepheard will be joined at the Sharks this year alongside West Perth forward Matt Fowler, who returns to Southport after a lengthy absence.
A former Queensland Under-21s representative, Fowler, 25, was on the inaugural Gold Coast Suns list before joining Southport in the 2011 NEAFL season.
Fowler moved across to the WAFL in 2012, where he has played 48 senior games over the last five seasons including a senior WAFL premership.
Southport Football Manager, Jarrod Field, said the forward duo will add much-needed depth and flexibly to their 2017 squad.
“We’ve lot a bit of talent, so having Shepheard, Fowler and (Josh) Baxter is going to give us some targets in the front half and hopefully we’ll be able to score more heavily,” he said.
“Shepheard can play as a key forward or key defender, and Fowler can also play deep forward, half-forward or even in the midfield.
“They are giving us some targets, but also some flexibility, so we’re really happy to have both of them on board.”
